                           My Educational Philosophy

My educational philosophy is based on progressive education. I believe that children learn by doing. They need to be engaged in things that are developmentally appropriate, meaningful and authentic to them. This is how they will truly learn. Grades and test scores are one small measure of accountability. Alternatively, we can account for our students learning through documentation, self-reflection, portfolios, and presentations. It is not as black and white as a test score, but the value of what it measures is far greater. One can see this in higher education where SAT's are becoming an optional tool for college admission. I believe that all children can learn from a supportive environment where they can invest themselves in the world around them. They need to be encouraged to question. As a teacher my responsibility is always evolving. I need to be aware of my students and their needs. I need to be flexible, creative, and resourceful. A child will be successful if they care about what they are learning, they are encouraged to question and take risks, and they are supported by their school community and the community at large.
